FAQ
How to cure your wooden barrel?
First rinse the inside of the barrel by filling and emptying 2 or 3 times to remove any wood debris.
Prior to use, your barrel must be filled with water preferably up to its max capacity for approximately 3 to 5 days. This will allow the oak to expand and retain liquid (the barrel may leak until cured). Any liquids poured inside the barrels should not stay more than three days as it can cause fungi and give off flavors that will affect the taste and quality of your beverage.
After this initial curing period, place the barrel on the holder/stand in a dry area. Liquid will continue to slowly drain through the wood during this period. Keep the barrel filled during this time.
When the barrel stops draining, empty the content and rinse again.
You are now ready to fill with your spirits!
Where should I store my barrel?
Barrels should be stored in a cool place and away from sunlight. This will protect both the exterior of
the barrel and the aging spirits inside. In time liquid will be absorbed by the barrel or evaporate,
generally about 5% over 2 years. Dry climates or heated homes tend to cause more evaporation.
Taking Care of your Barrel
You need to remember that wood is a material that needs to be hydrated, therefore, in the first few times you fill the barrel you will lose a percentage of the liquid and or liquor that is poured in, this will decrease with constant use. There are several factors that play a role in the percentage loss. Some of the factors can be the climate where you currently keep the barrel as well as the type of wood it is made of and its origin. Curing the barrel helps reduce any possible leaks it might have.
Any liquids poured inside the barrels should not stay more than three days as it can cause fungi and give off flavors that will affect the taste and quality of your beverage.
The best way to keep your barrel in good condition is to have it constantly filled with the beverage you would like to age. A second option would be to fill it with water but make sure to change it.
The barrel should not be empty for more than 6 days otherwise the hoops will begin to loosen and open cracks between the staves and the lids which will cause leaking.
